After sitting empty all summer during upgrades and repairs, new neighbors moved into the house next door to the east. New neighbors have a yellow tabby. Yellow tabby decided to jump the fence and explore my back yard and garden where chickens and ducks roam free. Livestock Guardian Dogs gave the yellow tabby second thoughts about which fences to jump.

That's the kind of thing I worry about. Of the three neighbors I have two are rental properties. The current renters don't mind the roosters, but if anyone new moves in they might try to start problems.

Are you a city dweller? How far away are your neighbors? Are roosters permitted in your area?

All the surrounding cities and suburbs around here allow a small number of chickens but not roos in urban areas within the boundaries of said municipality. Where I live is the most restrictive of them as the property needs to be designated as farmland or rural or whatever term those that make up laws and restrictions use.

I'm just outside the city limits. Roosters are allowed as long as neighbors don't complain and I can have as many chickens as I can reasonably manage, as long as they're contained on the property and well kept. I just think the thing about 'neighbors not complaining' is ridiculous because what if the next set of neighbors has a problem? Suddenly I have to get rid of my boys?

There should be some stipulation saying new neighbors need to get over themselves and not move in if they don't want to live near crowing roosters, lol.

My yard also smells better now than it did before I got the chickens.

Before when it would rain heavy and the water would sit for a few days the yard would have a boggy swamp smell.

Since I got the chickens and added soil sand etc to their runs the yard drains better than it did before and I'm constantly adding pelleted bedding and shavings to keep things dry and fresh for them.

It doesn’t sound like you’ll have a problem (get that box of gift eggs ready!), but you can always point out that their cat shouldn’t be allowed to roam.

I love that no one on here really corrects each other on typos, unless it's complete gibberish. I've reread a few of my posts and wondered if I was drunk when I wrote it (I don't drink) but other people just responded without hesitation, lol

I feel the same way when my RIRs let me pet them. They are very standoffish even though I raised them.

I read that about that breed a few times. I suppose it can be considered an asset in certain situations.

The closest I have is a sex-linked red but I believe her parentage is New Hampshire rather than Rhode Island as she's more of an orange red than the deep brownish red of a RIR.

Sherry's personality is... different. She's very highly food motivated and is the first one to come running when she hears the door open in case it's me with breakfast or a snack.

I'm pretty sure that's part of her problem with the littles as well. I'll put feed in their dish and her and Sunday will attack it like they've not eaten for a week. Then I'll go over to a second - or even sometimes a third - bowl to feed the littles. Sherry comes charging at them trying to keep ALL of the food for herself. She'll go back-and-forth between food stations eating some from each.

I know she's not starving as there's always a small bit left over after all 4 chooks and the 2 ducks have had their fill which they all peck at over the next few hours.

Sometimes when later reading what I wrote, even I cannot make out what I was trying to say.
