I read that about that breed a few times. I suppose it can be considered an asset in certain situations.

The closest I have is a sex-linked red but I believe her parentage is New Hampshire rather than Rhode Island as she's more of an orange red than the deep brownish red of a RIR.

Sherry's personality is... different. She's very highly food motivated and is the first one to come running when she hears the door open in case it's me with breakfast or a snack.

I'm pretty sure that's part of her problem with the littles as well. I'll put feed in their dish and her and Sunday will attack it like they've not eaten for a week. Then I'll go over to a second - or even sometimes a third - bowl to feed the littles. Sherry comes charging at them trying to keep ALL of the food for herself. She'll go back-and-forth between food stations eating some from each.

I know she's not starving as there's always a small bit left over after all 4 chooks and the 2 ducks have had their fill which they all peck at over the next few hours.
My problem girl will just chase them around the yard for kicks, even when food isn't involved.

She's the friendliest of the RIR to me, so that makes it suck even more. She may be friendly to me since she's the lowest ranking, currently, and just wants attention from someone who doesn't chase her off every time she gets close. :idunno

Don’t you dare post that!

Do it…

I didn't get all 4 today since I moved some new chicks in with them and the other 2 were more interested in the newcomers.

There may be a clue in what you just wrote. When the GLW was alive Sherry was the bottom of the pecking order. When it became just the BR & SL, she got a break and was treated less harshly by Black Sunday White.

The ducks OTOH keep back when I'm around but will waddle over to the feed bowl as soon as I step away. Quackers will grab a few mouths full and then lower his head and nip at ANY hen that dares try to eat while his cherished bride McDiver is dining.

If I'm sitting out in the fresh air and sunshine enjoying a snack of my own both hens will come around to see what I've got and if I'm going to share. They'll eat out of my hand if I offer it. I am hoping the pullets will one day come around like that. They were curious a few days ago but when they started to come near, Sherry came running across the yard after them.

I think that's part of the problem with the RIR too. Sweety, my very affectionate love of a pullet (with people), will chase them off if she sees that I'm giving them any attention. . . . maybe it's not all their fault, lol.

I have 4 cochins, as well. I thought they were all buff, but two are feathering in darker, so I think I have 2 Buff Cochins and 2 Frizzled Red Cochins.

Edit: Cochin Bantams . . . I forgot they come in standards, too.
I had to look this breed up. McMurray says they're more cold tolerant than heat tolerant. Maybe if I ever move somewhere the summers don't stay above 95 for 3 months in a row. I learned quickly with my first Wyandotte, BadaBing, how heartbreaking a week above 100 can be no matter what you do for them. 😭

Don't tell me that . . . . thankfully it's getting cooler, but I'll have to keep this in mind.

I actually bought an outdoor battery powered fan for the chickens, they also get frozen fruit frequently.

I also freeze water bottles and put in the waterers. I never have to refill them, just refreeze them. It also, supposedly, keeps things like mosquito eggs from hatching since the cold water keeps the eggs dormant.
