Oh yeah, they need some stuff in there....mine love fallen trees...they walk on them and lay under them. Mine also love leaves in the fall....I pile them in 3 feet deep and they have a ball scratching around in them and turning them into compost for me!

I take 3 or 4 cinder blocks and put a pallet on top. The chickens can hide underneath if they see a hawk, and they LOVE to sit on top of them, preening.

My silkies have pallets on the ground that they love to sit on. It gets them off the cold damp ground.

mine love wood piled up. Firewood or scrap lumber, they just love to nap on it, climb on it, poop on it, bring food to it. whatever
