Hello, this is my first post here after lurking for the last few weeks.

I'm completely new to keeping quails and was gifted the Courtnix cock I have (age unknown). Everything has been fine and I was in the process of sourcing him some hens for company, but recently he was hobbling around with his right foot curled under walking on his 'ankle' joint. I left it for a couple of days to monitor but it seems to be a lot worse and he's now really struggling to get about (although he is eating/drinking/sleeping okay). I've had him out for a good look and his 'knee' joint is red and swollen -it looks painful and I'm thinking I might have to do the thing I'm trying to avoid... :(

I am still learning but it's a shame if I have to learn at the expense of his little life. There's no reason to think he's had any kind of injury to his leg at all either. I've included a couple of photos that might help diagnose the issue.

Thank you in advance,

-Luke.

Understand that this is a wild a guess, but it looks like his knees are rubbing and hes gotten an infection, get him on some medicated feed if you want to save him.

Unless of course someone else has a better idea.

Is there a generic general purpose medicated feed or should I be looking at maybe adding some Doxycycline to his crumb & meal worms?

Any suggestions are welcome at this point as it's upsetting to see him struggle and think he might be in pain, however I do want to give him a chance if there's something I can do :)

The local feed store should have something you can add to the food youre using now, I keep some on hand but never use it

the stuff I have is in a crumbles form, tell them what you're going to do with it, they'll know what to give ya.

I wish I could be more help but at the moment I can't even remember the name of the antibiotic...

Okay, thank you. I'm going to stop by the feed store today and also give the leg a soak in Epsom salts or an antibacterial wash. Poor little thing -he must be lonely but as he is, I don't think he'd be any happier with a bunch of hens bustling around him. I'll report back in a day or three, although any other pointers are very welcome in the meantime :)

I've called a bunch of feed stores today and none seem to have anything suitable in stock. Most have directed me to online vet pharmacies but I'm not sure what I should be getting :/
