Covered cat box as nest box?

I have a Tupperware tub with a big hole in one end, sitting on a hay bale, and this is one of the hens favorite nest boxes.

I have one like the picture above and my hens use it on the ground no problem. I like it because I can open it up to dump the bedding out every so often and can hose it out.

I've used them on the ground for heavy breeds or broodies. Easy to find for free on CL, $.50 at garage sales or on the side of the road.

I have a hen that loves cat carriers, and this is bigger than those so I don't see why not

If it will fit into your coop, it should work just fine.

Because bugs and critters could crawl into it if it's not off the ground

That is exactly what I use & it's on the floor of the enclosed porch. They (3 hens) each have their own dog crate which is what they sleep in on the porch. When not laying or sleeping they are free ranging.

Well, maybe but I'm betting that it would on the floor of a coop,
not outside as shown in pic.
