Hi, in the winter time before work I have to let my hens out, it's usually quite dark and around an hour and a half till sunrise. I'm thinking of making a covered run, I know your not meant to use chicken wire, but this wire isn't the usual chicken wire the holes are much smaller and it is quite stronger. Will this work? Pic no.1 is the one I won't use.
Pic no.2 is the one I might use.
Or will i just use hardwear mesh?

It will work. It likely will not be predator proof, but if you are okay with that, then, yes it will work. Full disclosure - neither my run nor my coop are considered predator proof and they are fine for me.

I see you're in Ireland so no snakes but foxes, dogs, and minks/weasels will able to easily get in. If you're asking if it will work to hold the chickens in, yes. If you're worried about predators, that wire probably won't slow them down.

It may or may not keep predators out. If you do not want to have to worry about it I would use 1/2 inch hardware cloth. They can`t get a hold of it with their teeth. Then I would add about a 2 foot wide apron of the hardware cloth around the perimeter on the ground using some u shaped metal stakes.

I'm going to use hardwear mesh as I want to keep predators out. Cats and dogs wouldn't be an issue... but minks and weasles would be a big issue. I'll have the skirt around the run and gravel over it.
