X2 on the electric fence approach. My coop is secure but I wanted another layer of security after I found coon prints around the pop door latches inside of the run. Since the electric fence has been in place I have heard canines howl on two different nights, months apart, and what sounded like large rodents screech. Not sure what it says about me that I really, really enjoyed hearing those sounds.

The top ones are self tapping which don't work well in wood in my experience.

Yes, they are designed for metal roofing, and most all metal roofing is attached to wood

I've never had problems with them at all

Heck I never thought of using pennies. I bought washers and they were expensive. I have to check and do the math. Thanks for the idea.

Rancher

You are most welcome, but when Big Brother comes to your place wanting to know why you have $2.38 in drilled pennies..... Well, you've never heard of me.

The only reason you need the screws to be self tapping is if you drill through metal and then into wood....

Sorry for your loss. What impresses me about the picks is the obvious amount of force the coyotes used to BReak in. STOUT hinges and door frames are in order, prolly 1x2's as door framing are inadequate.

I tried the fender washer route to secure my hdwre cloth but didn't like the look, so I first staple the hdwr cloth in place where I want it, then use wood strips approx 3/4 x 3/4 screwed down like a frame over the hdwr cloth. Very secure and very nice finished look.

Sorry for your loss. I have lots of racoons where I live and an occasional coyote. My cousin had his guineas wiped out by raccoons and now has a few Geese in place as body guards...

omegorchards Thank you for the hard learning lesson I'm sorry about your roo's. But I thank you for posting about this and the photos I have a new mind set about the predators. Plus I'm knew here and I'm try to get the hang of chicken keeping.
