Coyote just took a chicken 10 feet from our house in mid afternnon

I guess you could always electric fence in your whole yard. Not the best option for kids, but do what you have to do. Unless coyotes are prevelent in your area I would call Game Control. If nothing else they will tell you something you can try.

Interestingly the coyote was standing almost on a piece of electric fence. Last year we had pigs, this year we don't. Certainly I don't think a coyote would've come through that particular way if the pigs had been there...they were fearsome when threatened and surprisingly fast for such hefty animals (but right softies with us, rolling over for a tickled belly).
Maybe thats a solution...get pigs back in there.

Good idea... a pig can tear up a dog!!... and if they get attacked they are LOUD! you'll hear them....
I dont know if anyone has said this yet... but human urine will scare them off too...
a lot of people (usually males... lol..) pee around their coops/yards to keep predators out...
*i know..sounds weird..*

OMG Redhen, pee around the coops?!?!? That is such a grossly FASCINATING idea! Ugh- its just seems sooo gross, but honestly? Yep, I'm going to be asking my hubby to do a little extra detail around my coop! * Just in case, ya know* I havent had an issue with predators inside my actual coop perimeter in almost 2 years, but I figure the extra 'line of defense' cant hurt, right? I guess I might never know if it really works, but I will probably have a nice giggle over the memory of him pee'ing for me and my chooks!!

It does kinda make sense since most animals use urine as a way to mark territory, why not us? As for it being a male who does it- that makes sense too since males are by nature more aggressive due to higher testosterone levels (in humans, I mean) and the hormones do show up in urine....might send a strong message to predators.

Really, I hadnt heard of it before, but your idea makes sense! Thanks!

suzettex5, you can pee and mark too

It works for us too when it comes to the critters for some reason...not that I've tried it !! LMAO!! However, hubby has been known to not want to walk into the bathroom at times.... so maybe that's why I hardly ever see fox, coyotes or wolves around here!!

yes, DH does pee around the orchard in the hope of keeping the deer away.
Maybe he could rotate his ablutions to doing the hen house, the duck pond area, the house etc etc...

I think male pheromones are more powerful...you won't get me squatting next to the chickens but he seems to quite like doing it

Human urine is a great way to keep predators away. One reason I am glad I have three boys. When they were young they loved that I told them to go outside and go around the garden. Now it is a nightly habit around the coop. Its only been a few days but we will see if it helps.

As soon as they become familiar with the smell it does NO good. They have to associate the smell to something bad. Like a bullet between the eyes. So, eliminate the middle step and just shoot 'em.

BTW Don't tell anyone. We (guys) KNOW peeing around the coop is only temporary. We just do it because..........................................WE CAN!
