I had a flock of 5 drakes, each a different breed. Three stayed outside and 2 inside, the 2 inside-Frankie & Johnny just never integrated outside well. Outside I had a beautiful black iridescent Cayuga, Midnight and the largest of the three; Mallard, Half-pint, the smallest of the three; Khaki Campbell, Chocolate. Yesterday morning, my husband went out to feed the three outside and our Cayuga was just gone. No paw prints in the yard. No way in or out the back yard except a back gate into the woods but it’s kept locked. I’m thinking if it were a coyote there would’ve been some type of paw marks but I could be wrong. After bringing my husband to work, I donned fishing boots and OFF spray to go look into the wooded area, you could see coyote scat here and there. My 3 drakes have a duck house but preferred sleeping under a tree in the backyard together. Midnight was the biggest, which also meant the slowest. Chocolate & Half-pint are just lost without him. The sit by the side fence waiting for him to come home. We’re back to locking the other two up every night once again, it’s just so heartbreaking to go through losing a second duck; the first was ill and by the time we realized it, she passed in my arms as we were leaving for the vet. Midnight was just over a year, but how do I help my other two get over losing their leader.
