Coyote potential

Sorry... I didn't realize it was such a problem in CA. I guess since it hasn't happened here in IA I was unaware of the problem. Thanks for making me aware!

We are visited by coyotes almost every evening. We have had 19 hens for a year and no problems. The run and house have chicken wire and there is a fence around the area. Our neighbor spotted a bobcat in their yard and it ran into the woods behind our house. Now that worries me a bit. The cougar and bear haven't bothered the hens either. We have inside dogs, none stay outside. My DH does lay down sent outside. Any suggestions about the bobcat?

Try calling local animal control for statistics. Then, talk to your neighbors. (See the post, 'Can a neighbor be a pest?')

We hear them at my place--edge of a small, rural town--almost EVERY night. Populations differ in different places.

Sure, you're gonna be at fault when someone in your neighborhood spots a coyote!

You're a chicken-farming-probably-gun-owning-looney!!!

(Keep up the good work!)

If people would stay up late at night they would be suprised at all the different critters that cross their property nightly. Garbage and feed left out for pets are the main attraction for the visits.

Not sure where you are in Mass, but here in western Mass we have coyotes all around us and while rural, we are well populated. I hear them next door in the cemetary and just above me on the ridge. They circle through my property all winter long. I have goats and chickens and so far everyone is safe and locked up at night.

Tell your neighbors to relax a little. You're not going to attract them, they are probably already there.

I have to agree with those that say they are already there. The last time we bothered to "spotlight" the coyotes on this property, we counted 13 pairs of eyes.
