Any advise for a coyote who can scale a 7 ft chain link fence? We thought we solved the problem (he was digging under our fence) by laying 3 ft of wire along the perimeter and that was all we saw of him for about 4 months-just chased him off my porch this morning to see him run up the chain link fence! He's gotten at least 5 of our girls in the last year or so-very depressing for my 7 yr old who hand raises them. Expense is a concern-any advise???

Electric fencing will dissuade the coyote.

is a shotgun or rifle with a spotlight an option for you? that how I deal with coyotes at my place.

I wish! My husband and I couldn't do it (no gun, and no aim) but our neighbor has offered-any advise on how to lure it back so my neighbor doesn't have to hide in my kids tree house all day? Poor guy, he has already helped my get rid of a raccoon and a skunk I trapped near the coop-we are a total city family trying to make it work!!! Thanks:)

Thanks! I'll look into it and price it out-even excluding the chickens, don't like the fact that it is in my yard where my kids and boston terrier play!

the chickens are your bait. He comes for that...

I think the only way to solve it is a dead coyote. the coyote most likely figured out that it can have a free meal at your place whenever it wants, so fences wont stop it.

A predator proof coop/run will keep your birds safe. If you free range, then free range during the day and when you can keep an eye on them. If you are on a farm then you can free range the birds with livestock that may deter coyotes. You could try electric wires but we don't do electric. We use to have a lot of coyotes and often heard them howling at night. Now that we have a dog pack on the property the coyotes have moved on. Our fencing is standard farm fence 4' high.

We have installed thee acres of 4' chain link and I am now in the process of stringing electric fencing on the outside of it. I have read that two strands, 5" and then 15" above the ground, twelve inches from the fencing will keep coyotes from going under or over it. I found a type of insulator for the wire that attaches directly to the chain link. We will see if it works. I'm also going to be getting a livestock guardian dog this fall. The flock is kept inside a coop at night, but the coyotes here are very active during the day also.

Sorry for your losses. That's a tough coyote you have, clearing a 7' fence! Obviously shooting it will solve your provblem, but you have to see it, and have your gun nearby - sometimes this just doesn't happen! What about large dogs? While a livestock guardian dog like a great pyrenese or anatolian shepherd would do the trick, any large dog or dogs makes a very good deterent. Coyotes are opportunistic, and if they have to tangle with a couple of large dogs, they will start looking elsewhere for their easy meals. Electric wire added to your existing fence would be a good and relatively easy upgrade. Just make sure you are running 5000+ volts through the wire. Anything less may not do the job.
