Sounds like a good idea in theory, but I wouldn't bet any money on it. Coyotes can and will lure dogs away to kill them. A coyote came into my backyard a few years ago, setting my female dog (she's gone now) to barking. Even when I went out onto the enclosed back porch he didn't leave until I went to open the outer door. He saw and heard me come out, but didn't offer to move until I started to open the door. I've not seen any since, but many pets, mostly cats 'disappear, never to be seen again.

Yeah.. we used to have a ton of stray cats around here.... not any at all now.

Can't you shoot the coyotes? They are a danger to your animals and family. If you can't shoot them maybe you could trap them and dispatch them humanely. Wishing you a safe and speedy outcome to this problem.

this is the only good thing about yotes

If it were me I would try to figure out a way to coyote proof the area that you allow them to go to at night, so that you can still leave the door open. I would be careful though because I have no doubts a pack of coyotes will win. Do they have bounties for Coyotes down your way? They do up here in Maine >

Red hen, be careful. Back in MN, my good friend lost a small pig (about 20-25 lbs) to a pack of dogs. I would keep them shut up at night. Just to be safe. They may not like it much, but it is for their own good. Where are you in W. Mass? We are in Granby, and have noticed a sharp drop in wild bunnies around here.

Maybe make a small fully enclosed area around the pop door so they can still go out to potty in safety. If you put a door in it, then they can just go through the enclosure on their way out during the day.
