kjpuggles: I have a pack of coyotes around as well as every other kind of predator. I free range my chickens, guineas and geese. The chickens go in their coops and are locked up securely at night. The Guineas roost high in the trees most nights. Only the geese stay out but stay close to the house (and have their own barn which is closest to the house. I rarely lose a bird.
I have found the best way to deter coyotes and predators is a couple of good dogs. I lost a full grown Toulouse goose the other night when my dogs were indoors. I had fallen asleep on the couch with them sitting/sleeping beside me. The coyote took the goose right out of the yard close to the house. I have lost a Guinea but it ventured off the property. The chickens sometimes venture in the woods but the dogs are out all day. I recently added a Jenny in the pasture and since the attack from the other night, I have been playing a radio in the goose barn (I put it on one of those talk channels) -- I realize dogs have to sleep too -- that's why i have two.
I have those Nite Guard Lites employed strategically about the perimeter of my property but that did not deter this coyote(s). I believe there were four in the pack because the remains of the goose (just feathers) in the woods were in four distinct piles. They eat all of the bird. same with the Guinea a couple months ago (I only found her wings and one foot and some bones that were cleaned of meat). I found all the remains just after the kills so the predator ate the bones claen not the ants & such.
