Coyotes vs dog concerns

I have 7 dogs--3 are Shepherds. We have lots of coyotes, but I also have 6 ft vinyl fence with three locked gates. My youngest male will kill any dog that comes near him. He has to be managed. My older male has access to come in and out all night. My dogs only bark when necessary and it's very rare you hear them. The threat has to be real. My female is really quiet, with a deadly stare. I do not mine to get into any fights with any wildlife. If my male barks I'm out there in a second.

I think I have to many for the coyotes to bother. Not long ago a lady that had 2 pit bulls and a small French bulldog I believe lost one pit to a coyote and the other two dogs were injured. They were most likely going after the small dog. This happened in the middle of the afternoon.

Coyotes are looking for the easy score. This time of year they will be killing rabbits fawns and deer as they can. You dog will present a challenge to kill and likely wound pack members even if they could kill her. They would have to be pretty hunger to pick that fight. A smaller dog or older dog, maybe.

Do you live in the county and I assume you don't have enough land to let someone hunt the coyotes? If you are still worried, maybe you need a paddock fence where the dog can sleep. Most people out here with dogs guarding stock have the dog fenced in with the stock.

We have a ton of coyotes here. A neighbor said he has some dens near his house and have inquired about someone coming to hunt them but the licensed hunters here won't do smaller 10 acre parcels, They hunt them at night on much larger pieces of property. A lot of people here use emus and donkeys as guard animals. There are some with dogs.

It depends the coyotes. Yes, they might jump her, day or night. My neighbor’s large (LGD type mix) is outside from sun up to sun down and I saw her get jumped by coyotes. The coyotes here also attacked my other neighbor’s large lab while she was standing there with the dog.

Some dogs genuinely enjoy being outdoors all the time. Perhaps a chain link kennel would provide a safe space for the dog to sleep outdoors. The dog does not need to be in the kennel all the time, but it might be a good idea for overnight and times when no people are home.

Donkeys such as Bethlehem borro's which are popular will be a problem for your German Shepard. My neighbor had one and I would not leave my lab around him.

A problem in what way?

Donkeys will kick and hurt or possible even kill your dog. Lots of videos out there on it if you want to watch it. They will protect sheep, chickens and such from big predators and come down on dogs too if left with them. I have heard LLamas can be bad also, just don't know anyone that has them.

It sounds like you have an immense amount of issues going on. I would get those under control and fence in your property before you even think about getting another dog.

I agree with the other suggestions about getting your other pet issues under control before adding any more dogs. Build that fence ASAP. A fence will prevent neighbors' dogs and wildlife such as deer from entering your property but it may not stop coyotes. They can jump 6 ft fences. You'd need to electrify the fence to keep them out.

As to the problem you mentioned about hunters not coming on smaller properties - why not join with your neighbors and offer a hunter a larger parcel together, especially if you have a known coyote pack or den around? Everybody wins, except the coyotes of course.
