I am feeding game bird food crumbles to our turkeys (it is what the breeder feeds them and all his turkeys). He also said to add some cracked corn. Should I do that with every feeding (daily) or stop during the hot temperatures? I know with horses and such, corn is for producing body heat. Does it have the same affect on turkeys? Am I making it harder for them to deal with our awful heat? (eastern missouri, about half way between stl louis and hannibal).

Are you trying to fatten them up more? If not they really don't need it I use regular scratch to chum mine when I want them to come with me or bread but I get stampeded when they see the bread....mine love bread my SIL said to feed corn about 6 weeks before butchering it helps with the fat...I have her come over to check mine out that way I'm hoping to have several ready for Thanksgiving as the oldest ones will only be 29 weeks right now they are on 24% turkey grower and a little scratch and bread here in Paso there is no green grass just dried up stuff.

I don't feed my turkeys any corn during the hot months mainly because it seems to go to waste if I do. They just don't want it. They prefer the pellet feed , greens, fruits and veggies. During the summer, watermelons are a favorite and in the fall, pumpkins are high on the list. The grains come into the diet around the end of September when the birds begin preparing for the coming winter.

I don't feed corn or scratch. Its pretty poor nutrition and it is a hot feed. It will just dilute your good nutrition you get from the gamebird/turkey feed. It is like feeding candy. If your wanting more eggs you will skip the corn.

When I mix whole corn with their layer feed, my tom picks out ONLY the whole corn. Once he has picked out the whole corn, then he eats the rest of the feed. He loves whole corn! I don't like feeding it to them because I think they will choke on the whole corn but that's just me being "overprotected" and a worry wart.
