Hi,
i have had cracked eggs recently in the chicken coup. The eggs are cracked down the middle, but the membrane is still intact. Is this from the cold weather or do my hens need calcium? We do have a 75 watt bulb in the coup , so I would think that the eggs would not be frozen.
thanks

I'm waiting to see the smart person's reply. I have no idea either! ~ sorry!

Yep - sounds like they are getting frozen.

Need a thermometer in the coop, to tell the temp. Eggs that are shuffled in the nestbox while close to freezing crack also.
I have a heatlamp that keeps my temps above freezing in the coop. However I have still seen frozen eggs, so it depends on where your egg is, distance from light etc....so check the temps.

Also when hens go to lay, they move things around in the nest to get comfortable, they sometimes will crack eggs in doing so.

sounds like a frozen egg to me too

don't know where you live, but 75 watts in my neck of the woods wouldn't be enough to keep eggs from freezing
