My eggs are cracked at the narrow tip of the egg. My girls are new to egg laying, they started about 2 weeks ago. I have shavings in the nesting boxes but they scratch it out and lay on the hard wood. I believe the eggs are cracking when then hit the wood floor?? How can I prevent this from happening??? 20181114_162408.jpg 20181114_162416.jpg 20181112_182925.jpg

Lip on the boxes, and I put a layer of shavings down with a layer of hay or straw on top. I do that so that if there is a broken egg the shavings absorb the mess better. They will dig and scratch like crazy in shavings, but they don't bother the hay/straw so much. I also seed mine with golf balls so there is less fussing over the 'favorite' box. If you change your material they may complain and be reluctant, seeding the boxes will also help with that.

I use compressed straw and have a 3 inch lip at both ends. You are right about the egg hitting the nest floor. I had the same problem in the beginning. I didn't put enough straw in the nests and they scratched some out even with a 3" lip. 20181110_101340.jpg . My first egg. 20160730_134940.jpg . You can see the floor. I didn't get broken eggs till they got bigger.
I would put a 4 inch lip if you can. GC
