Cracked eggs?

Hi everyone!

Let me start off by saying it's extremely cold here in MA. One of my hens has been laying eggs, but every time we find them they're cracked almost half way down. What is causing this? How can I prevent them from becoming cracked? We're trying to catch them before hand so we can hopefully incubate them and hatch them. Help!

Frozen eggs. That's all I've gotten since December. ☹ You'll have to check about twice a day if you want to try and get them before they freeze. If you can check even more frequently that would be best. Sorry about your eggs!! Good luck

Thanks! We've been trying to check as often as we can but sometimes when we check we never see eggs until later on. I'm not sure when she lays but I'm definitely going to have to check more often. Thanks again!

No problem. My chickens like to lay at night, so by morning they're all cracked and frozen. I hope you have fabulous luck in hatching eggs

I use seedling heating mats under the chopped straw in my nest boxes. I haven't had any frozen eggs yet. The lowest temperature range the eggs have seen so far was 9F to 18F. All day.
