Cracked eggs.

About any place in your coop is a good place for mites to hide. Any crack in the wood or anything else, shavings, straw, anywhere tiny things can get out of the daylight and hide. It may be harder to clean but carpet is not going to be any more dangerous as far as parasites go than anything else.
Yup, it's funny seeing people worry about carpet in nest boxes when they've got cubic yards of bedding on the floor.
 
I have two "engineered" size nesting boxes. I brought a pail of shavings from my woodworking shop in and filled both boxes then sat the pail in my garbage can of DE that sits in the coop. Ever since they have been laying in the pail instead of the nests.....
