Craigslist Peafowl "facts"

Oh yes don't forget the white peafowl which are RARE albinos! I have no idea how white peafowl became thought of as a rarity. When you see a white dog you don't say, "Oh look at that rare albino dog!" although one girl once said that about our white dog.

I will never forget being at the parrot rescue and this lady and her husband were visiting and they own a parrot rescue in another state. Well the parrot rescue here has a few peacocks roaming the grounds but they hardly know anything about them so I had been telling them that one was pied, etc. This lady who was visiting was trying to say that the white peacock was a rare albino and I explained that the white is just a variety and they are actually not rare at all. She got very defensive with me and disagreed as if I know nothing about birds.

Sometimes when I tell people that I have 3 white peafowl they freak out as if that is so rare. I have seen people price white peafowl at high amounts and I am guessing because of the misconception that white peafowl are rare albinos some people will actually pay a high price for some whites.

Don't forget about when you see green peafowl for sale on craigslist and they have photos of the parents which is a 50% spalding pictured with maybe a 10% spalding.

I say you should always bother to use the proper terms for peacocks such as peahen, peachick, peafowl, etc and then explain to people what it means. I think it is good to educate people even if it might seem silly to even bother.

Also it depends on your location as well. Such as Western Idaho is more into cattle not peafowl so when people saw my White peacock in school they would say how did you find such a rare bird? Or how did you get it to become White? I had one person tell me there's no way to have peafowl tame enough to perch them on my arm. I showed photos and they said it was Photoshopped. I wanted to hit the person. The stupid thing was it was during fair when I had Thora at the fair. I didn't have her on my arm since I was near the carnival area not near Thora's pen. I feel like Scar sometimes.

I'm part of the Agriculture classes I can do a capstone which I just do and intern with someone and write a report and show photos and a bunch of other stuff. You can do other things but that's the main one in the Ag classes. For my Senior Project I wanted to sit at the front door of Walmart or some other popular store and do a survey on how much people know in Poultry and how many people knew about poultry and who didn't. After all there are a lot of questions people never thought about or just accepted a myth or never learned. Just to show how much people know about the poultry area. My teacher said,"I can't since I'm bound to get someone to argue and I would probably be a really mean person rather verbal or physical and get kicked out, or I would get someone who would give the an answer that I would insult them." I told them I would try to restrain myself as much as I could or I would do it for fun. For peafowl I keep my lid on, now if you were to be like one kid in my class that asked why do you have to kill an animal for meat why not just take the meat of the animal and let it go back to the field and let them produce more that way they don't have to die. Though now I have more self control since I've noticed more and more people are not as well educated in these areas. But when there is that one person that is higher up than the majority in that knowledge I'm happy that I don't have to start from square one. I like educating people but sometimes it's just beyond me how they couldn't find that out. My teacher did a test run and I failed it. I think if she were to do it I would rather last longer or I would pass. The teacher has known my family for a while so she knows what buttons to push to get me to crack. It only took three questions to get me to crack.

Wow...
I know this topic isn't about killing animals, but I have to say some people don't really understand the whole process. You can still respect animals and kill them for food. Yes there are some people that go about it the wrong way such as paying to kill a lion that has been tranquilized and is trapped in a pen - but killing animals for meat is not evil.

You just need to practice listening to people's opinions and being quiet. I know it is difficult I just asked some people questions for a class I have called Advanced Ideas and Concepts. I was asking people if they believe if we have a soul and/or a spirit and what they believe happens after you die, etc. There were some people's responses that I wanted to reply to with my own viewpoint but I just told them thanks for their response. The goal isn't to tell someone they are right or wrong, but if they ask you for your opinion you can tell them making sure you explain yourself by saying I think _____ because 1. ____, 2. _____ and 3. _______. A lot of people are happy to talk about what they think but when you start wanting to challenge their ideas and start a debate that will not go over so well. If you must correct them on something you have to use the same formula for explaining yourself by giving them reasons why they are incorrect, but be friendly about it. Some people do better with being corrected than others.

An example of something a person could say is:

Yeah I think peacocks are beautiful the girls have such a pretty long tail and the boys are rather plain looking.

Now there are a few things wrong with this statement. The girls are peahens and the peacocks are the ones with the long train which isn't the tail but tail coverts. You can just thank this person for their opinion or you can say: "I think you might be confused because the males are the ones with the long 'tail' which is actually called a train. Don't worry it is a common mistake.

Ending it on a positive note by saying that it is a common mistake makes the person feel better for not knowing. It is like in art class when we critique someone. You don't just point out a big flaw with someone's art and walk away. You point out the problem and then give them a solution to solve that problem.

It looks like the Craigslist ads for my area are pretty good for real peafowl facts... Oops I just found peacock eggs for sale. Hmm they are pretty cheep for being from a peacock instead of a peahen.

Some baby peacocks on there too.

What a way to explain it. I guess it's just like livestock judging, you can't completely say everything wrong with the animal you have to give it some grants no matter how bad it may be. I think I will do it for fun. Just a quick survey thing, where I don't say if they are right or wrong just ask the questions and thank them for their time. I'm sure I won't crack when it comes to that.

The sad part is they even added male to it. If they would've left it with peacock I could see them using it so people would be able to find it easier but calling the hen a male oh no.
