Hello I am thinking about getting some silkies from craigslist, the pics are cute but my ? is the dad is black and the mom is white what color will they be when they get older , they are a light to med gray right now, wouldnt you get black ones and white ones? the lady said in her email they will probably be gray with a lttle white here and there on the tale, ?2. with this cross are they nice looking color when grown or are they kinda blah looking? also please post pic of this mix if you can thanks

No, it doesn't work like that. Think of it like this....white acts like "paint" and covers other colors. It also depends on what color the parents of the silkies are too. On the other hand, most white silkies are covering gold so you could get anything. Likely you will get some black but mostly white. It's really difficult to say for sure...

You are unlikely to get white from the mix (unless that non-white parent is carring a hidden copy of recessive white. I would not say that most whites carry gold. It is the wildtype allele, but that is about all aI would say. If you have photos of the chicks, we can give you some expectations, but realize that every white can be genetically different. White is an OFF switch that prevents the display of colours and patterns genetically present in the bird. Every white X non-white can give a different outcome, even if the non-white is the same bird for all these pairings!

Wow I think I actually understand what you said or how you said it, so that cross will more than likely to be a grey or splashish? thanks again

No- white + black does not = grey. You'll probably get black, white, and possibly everything in between. It depends on what the white is hiding. You can only get splash if you have blue or splash birds. If the white one is actually splash then all offspring with a black mate would be blue.

heck...if their cute just get em!

Ok I called her and asked her and all she said was she got them from her friend who ordered from hatchery and split them with her she got only three and it turned out to be black male and 2 white hens that is all she knows, so if she got them from hatchery would they be true/pure colors???? Again thanks for your paitence
