Crap, How do I get rid of lice??????

Do you know how to get the nits out of their beards and muffs? My two little pullets have them there and their feathers are just so tiny there I am not sure what to do.

I ended up just having to continuously dust them with DE until all of the nits had hatched and were gone. It took about 2 weeks of dusting them once a day. The muff area is hard because its so close to their nostrils. Try not to let them breath it in. You might try mixing a solution of water and DE I heard it can be very effective against the lice and isn't so invasive in the airway.

That's what I ended up doing tonight. Making a paste of DE, soap(safe soap), and water. That way I could control where it went and rubbed the nits hoping that would help rid them faster.

What is DE dust? I know what seven is. I'm new and don't know what poultry dust is, but I'm needing to do something with my silkies and 1 duck.

The only poultry dust I can find around here is Y-Tex Gardstar Garden & Poultry Dust. Is that what people are referring to when they talk poultry dust? I also did find DE. So which would be better for mites?

When I powder my flock, I put my dust in the foot of a pair of panty hose. Like a powder puff. Waaaaay less messy and my chickens seem to enjoy their little pat down.

I have experienced great results using DE. Some question its safety, but my feeling is that if we'll use synthetic toxins without hesitation, why not a natural substance. While it may carry a risk (as everything does), the benefits outweigh those that come with poisons, imho.

The biggest problem I've had with using DE, is that it needs reapplied a couple of times to get the job done for lice.

For mites, I would use AnimalScents Ointment

Good luck!

I think the active ingredient in the Y-Tex is permethrin, and that is what you want to treat mite and/or lice. Don't waste your money on DE.
