I joined this forum a while ago, and I am just getting around to saying "Hi!", mostly because I am shy, and these crazy chickens are keeping me very busy
My husband and I recently found out that we could have up to 8 chickens where we live in Denver. We eliminated processed food from our diet, and it made sense to know where our food came from in the form of eggs too.
I must admit, I was not a huge fan of birds of any kind, so I very much expected that these chickens would just be egg producers, not pets. Then I met the chickens... They have so much personality, that I find myself fascinated by them. Instead of freaking out when they start flapping around like crazy (as I would have if it were any other type of bird), I am the one that steps right into the frackas and picks one up.
We started out with three, 1 Americauna named Sam-I-Am (she will lay green eggs), and 2 Marans (named Oreo and Cocoa). Cocoa is also known in our house as loco-Cocoa because she is the craziest of the bunch.
We then ended up with two polish, a silver lace named Ethel, and a gold lace named Lucy. The two polish are so good with the kids. They will verbally protest a bit if they get picked up by my 5 year old son, but they don't flap around too much.
Starting from the top are Sam-I-Am, then Cocoa, then Oreo. This was the first day we had them.
And here are Ethel and Lucy.
Anyway, I think this is a fabulous site, I have learned so much about how to care for these crazy little creatures.
