Hi all! I am new to the chicken business. I started out with a cream legbar, black maran, and a foghorn. I then acquired a couple baby silkies, one of which turned out to be a rooster I couldn't keep (though he was my favorite), so I got another silkie baby to replace the roo. Fast forward a couple months, and I lost my leghorn and legbar. I am no longer interested in foghorns. That lady just seemed like a bully in general. Now, I am down to 2 small silkies and a black maran, and the black maran is deciding to be a bully to them. I just bought a gold speckled appenzeller and a light brahma, so I am hoping she bonds with those girls and stops going after the babies. Any advice appreciated! Very new and about to get 2 more silkie/frizzles and want to know what my best options are for introducing and maintaining a healthy flock.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Silkies can be integrated with other breeds, but it's always recommended to have a few silkies so they can hang out together and would get picked on less.

As far as integrating them amongst each other, I do it all the time with younger ones within weeks or even a couple of months apart. Again, strength in numbers, never get just one or two, three or more is best.

For older integration, silkies can be as mean and nasty to younger birds as any breed. I find that when the young silkies get to be 4 months old, it can be done, with some issues, but at 5 months, it's perfect! A pecking order has to be re-established so a hen or two might peck a bit, but if there's a particular mean one, I pull her out for a few days. Her attitude changes then. :)
