I don't know what to do for my poor crazy hen. I'm wondering if hens can have hormonal imbalances.

First, she seems to have the chicken version of hysterical pregnancy that continues to where a woman will convince herself she had a baby and push around an empty carriage. Several month ago she sat on eggs for about 8 days, then abandoned the clutch. Now, she calls over her non- existent chicks to the feed pile, waiting for them to eat just as the hens with chicks do. She even tries to take over other hens' chicks. We have tried to let her brood, but she will only sit on eggs for about 4 hours before she gives up.

She has developed another strange habit. While the other hens dodge the roosters, she struts back and forth in front of them until they jump her. Then she goes to the next rooster and repeats the strut until he mates her as well.

I doubt there's anything I can do for her, but it seems like a pretty unhappy existence to yearn for chicks but not have a clue how to do it. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

I forgot to mention that her egg shell colour has changed. Her eggs were green, and now they're so pale they look almost white. I can't imagine a connection, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Have you considered getting her a few chicks for herself? Sounds like if she's trying to steal the other hens chicks that she'd take to some bought just for her. Poor desperate hen.

Sad.

Just remember that breeders have been trying to breed out several characteristics for some time, like broodiness and molting, and have been trying to breed in lots of egg laying -- and a whole different set of characteristics for meat birds, of course. As a result, we often don't see what would be normal instinctive behaviors in a wild population -- we see the results of this cross breeding and inbreeding, instead.

Just do the best you can for her. Sounds like you will be a great chicken momma.

I'm considering it.We have a few baby chicks by chance. I thought I'd take them to her and see what he does. It'll be when I can be home all day in case she rejects them. Worth a try, I think. We'll see how it goes!

I agree. I do wonder what her breeding history is.

Great News!!

The crazy bird went broody shortly after I posted this, and just successfully hatched out 7 baby chicks! She took them out to the yard today and began to teach them how to scratch for food! Hopefully she'll get into her groove now and become a happier hen. we're all very pleased for her!
