Crazy idea? Ceramic tile in coop floring...

Aww, IC. That's the difference between newbs and experts.

Cushioning - that's something I did not think of. OK, the plan is to seal the concrete and put shavings on top.

It's just mind boggling how am I going to haul these bales in the back of a Mitsubishi...

BTW, my name is Julia. Comp6512 is not very descriptive, but this is something I can remember.

Nice to be here. I promise, I'll post pics of the coop when it's done.

Thank you all!

Mine will not take a bale in the trunk. Dang small car and a two door at that.
So I position the passenger seat back, then have it in a 'laying down' position. Fits like it was made for it.

Good luck.

My husband transports 4 or 5 (I forget which) plastic bales of shavings in his 4-door Toyota Corolla. He's gotten 11 into our Ford Taurus stationwagon but I'm really not sure how

You can tailor your management strategies for bedding conservation and not have to buy very much of it, though. I only use a couple-few bales per year per 7x10-ish pen -- although it helps a lot that I a) use droppings boards, b) have much fewer chickens per square foot of coop than most BYCers, and c) have a well-ventilated dry coop. More crowding, no droppings boards, or dampness will increase, possibly by a whole lot, the amount of bedding you go through. And of course it depends on how you choose to manage that bedding.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
