I know that the pink color of flamingos comes from what they eat. I think most zoos do something to supplement the color because they don't have the natural food source. It might work with chickens, but it is probably a long term thing. Babies with a lot of carrots and sweet potatoes in their diet will take on ah orange hue from all the beta carotene.
