He tried jumping up clawing and spurring me today. I put him flat on his back. He's definitely going somewhere! Are they all like this?

Some ARE like that, but my George is lovely :)

He will eat from my hand, call the girls over when he finds nice food for them, and if I try to pick up one of the girls to treat her or check her out, George will sit in the corner of the coop and whimper like a puppy til its over!

That being said, if hawks or birds fly overhead, he is out there protecting his girls.

He has never EVER come at me though. He wouldn't want to either!

No they aren't all like that. I've had both...nice and crazy. Crazy usually gets invited to dinner. Just curious what breed is he and how old is he?

He's a Production Red. I'd say bought 5 months old. Bought four pullets but he surprised us. Didn't want a rooster just hens for the eggs. Just wanted some backyard chickens...now cant even enjoy the back yard! He's come after me, my wife, granddaughter and the neighbors puppy.

I'd put him in the freezer or give him to someone else for the same purpose. I have a 16 week old cockerel. He acts like a teenage boy with the girls and challenging another young cockerel, but never mean towards us. I can deal with that.

Nobody produces Production Reds with a thought towards good rooster behavior; those cockrels mostly never leave the hatchery. He won't improve with age and needs to be dinner, for you or someone else, as soon as he's big enough. Rooster behavior is mostly genetic and somewhat learned; human aggression is separate from behavior with other chickens. He's NOT protecting the hens in a good way; you are the source of all food, not a danger to the girls. Any idiot who attacks someone twenty times larger who brings food can't be very smart or worth keeping, IMO. Mary

I second that, Mary.
I 'm sorry Frindizzle but when a person can't enjoy their backyard and their granddaughter is being attacked, we'll have to agree to disagree.
