Hi! We were recently blessed with the accidental ownership of some very fun laying hens. It started as a summertime animal husbandry / self reliance project for our kiddos with a few chicken dinners at the end of it. We went in on an order with some farming friends of ours and received five "roosters from egg laying breeds." Secretly, I hoped my hubby would fall for chickens and we'd get laying hens this coming spring; he prayed I'd get fed up with chickens and move on to a new garden trellis or something! At 12 weeks, we confirmed we had five black star hens! Still planning to butcher then, I said I would so I would, my six year old came and showed his dad and I a crayon drawing of his family, complete with chickens but minus his younger brother. When his dad sent him back to add his brother in the family, he turned to me and announced we were keeping "these things." So after building a temporary tractor, the poor man set to work on a permanent coop and run . (Too many dogs in our neighborhood to have unsupervised free ranging.) Now, he just shakes his head as my two oldest fight over who gets to "do chickens" with me. We're blessed to have a daddy who, thankfully, likes eggs and loves us!
