A couple of my buff polish hen and roo suffered from CRD, which had symptoms of sneezing, coughing, wheezing, running nose and difficulty in breathing. I separated them and treated them for 5 days with Tylosin/Tylofurcin Antibiotics in water. In addition to that during that period i also increased their vitamin and minerals in take.

Thankfully the disease in most birds has been cured however there is a pair of buff polish that still shows symptoms of slight coughing and occasional sneezing. They r kind of like 70% better but not 100%. The cycle of antibiotics is over and I do not want to continue it for over 5 days.

Any suggestions would be appreciated with regards to how can I completely get rid of the disease. I have also mouth fed them with chopped garlic during this period. The hen has laid a couple of eggs after it got better.

Any thing else that I can try? or else is it safe to feed them with cough syrups that are used for humans which are diluted. We do not have the facility of Vet in our area....

I hope you realize that you can't get rid of the disease. You have a permanent illness in your flock that will go on until your flock and any birds they have been in contact with are long gone. That is what the "C" in CRD stands for: chronic. You can extend the antibiotics for a few days (2, I think), but after that you are going to need to treat the symptoms palliatively, with no expectation of a 100% "cure." You are never going to cure your flock of this and they are going to be carriers (capable of spreading the disease to others even in the absence of active disease signs and symptoms) of this disease for life.

Cough syrups are absolutely not advisable. They contain many ingredients which are detrimental to poultry. VetRX may ease their congestion and breathing difficulties. Adding crushed ginger and honey to their feed may also help. Continue with the vitamins for the whole flock and add probiotics to their feed/water daily. Close your flock and don't let any birds out or in. Any new birds that come in will get sick immediately, and any birds that go out will continue to spread this disease.

I am sorry. I always have said that if my birds show signs of CRD I would cull the entire flock. Fortunately, I have not been presented with this situation. I am sorry that you are currently living with it.

Good luck.

There is an experience I had this night. One of my birds suffered from difficult breathing. There was some mucus in her mouth which is the cause of her difficult breathing. At a point, she was so weak that she was about to die. I gave her aloe vera and multivit but she did not get any better. Do you know what did the miracle?

GINGER! I crushed some ginger and add a little water to it. I then used a syringe to give her the ginger water. Within one minutes, the difficult breathing cease. What a miracle.

If the ginger worked for your bird, that's good. That means your bird didnt have a respiratory disease.
