I got a freebie Cream Brabanter egg in a order. Now I have seen pictures of them and very interested to know more about the breed. What is everyones experience with them?

Not many people have them. Someone was giving away three roos on here, and when I saw the picture, it looked like a trio, so I took them. We love them. 2 girls and a boy.

The stock from breeders around the country appears to come from hatchery stock and then they work on the lines. Apparently they are an old dutch breed that had become extinct but were recreated in the early 1900s. Not a whole lot of info anywhere. My two pullets have the proper speckled markings. The roo has more penciled markings which is not desirable. I don't care. They are all so dang cute, and so gentle. Everyone that comes to the farm marvels at them, with their funny elvis hairdos.

Good luck with your egg!

I liked mine a lot, as you can tell by my avatar. Unfortunately, I recently let mine get killed through a stupid mistake.

And also unfortunately, the breeder is not selling any more birds this year!

I think perhaps the lack of spangling on the back of the roos is a roo thing. Mine also had that, and in a previous discussion here on byc it seemed that others did as well. So I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I am gonna keep trying to get more of these birds. IMHO they are definitely worth having!

I have 1 Brabanter roo and one hen (she may be a cream Spitz).

There are a few of us here who keep Brabanters and Spitzaubens.
I can't say much about him other than he is quiet, lives with my silkies,
and LOVES to free range. He's been cooped up for a few days and isn't
happy. I need to find him a good rooster home or eat him.

Thanks for the info!

I am SO hoping this egg hatches. So far I really like what I have learned. Are they fairly cold hardy? Not a big deal, if not I would heat an area, I just would like to know.

I was kind of wondering about that because of all I have heard about another tophatter breed, Polish, having problems with frostbite. Maybe its different with Brabanters.

I'd bring him personally if I could get the time off from work. Trouble is with all the
deals on land between PA and Tennesee I'd never come home.
