Thank you for your responses! I picked the little one up from a large breeder in Southern California called Chickens Galore. I am a first time chick owner and this is my first flock! I didn't have this breed on my radar at all when I went to pick them up (Had a strict list after researching breeds on this website for MONTHS) I wanted a barred rock but they didn't have any so I said "What about those auto sexing breeds?" and the guy said "Oh yeah. We have Cream Legbars" so we looked in the brooder, saw this cute little brown head and I said "What about that one?" He took it out, looked at it and said "I can be 80% sure that this is a girl". So I took his word for it.

After coming home and then researching the breed on this site, I saw a picture that someone had posted of their babies with a girl & boy side by side and to my dismay, discovered that my "80% girl' is 99% boy. Grrrrrrr. Not that the little one isn't adorable but we have strict zoning laws and we cannot have roosters! I am a veggie, so don't suggest that I off the little man

I have an email in to the man who runs Chickens Galore, so hopefully he will exchange for a young lady!

I'm wondering if your little chick might not be pure CL. First CL are 100% sexable at hatch there should be no confusion or mistake, and second the reddish brown face is throwing me off. It almost looks like maybe it could be a red sexlink chick with a CL rooster as one of the parents. The reddish brown face would mean girl. I could be very wrong so I hope someone else chimes in on this chick. It's just the thought I got when I saw the face pics.

I just received a response from Chickens Galore & this is what he said:

"Those would have hatched last weekend, so they would be one week old. All of those are of the speciality breeds we sell and are sold as straight run and are labeled as such. Though appears to be a misunderstanding as to the sex of the speciality breeds. As for the cream leg bars they are and auto sexing breed and are new to us so it would be possible for Carlos to possibly mistakenly have given you the one for the other, though again we offer them as a straight run speciality breed only. All of that said, I want to make you happy and I will be happy (one time only) to trade the birds now for any other of equal age."

I think I'll send him a picture of the boy & girl earlier in this thread, so he knows what I'm talking about (maybe because they are new to them, they just weren't aware? I will ask if he knows if these are pure CL's or if maybe he purchased fertile eggs from someone? I'll keep you posted!

Hi Chicken Pickin....not too personal, at all. He charged $15.00 for each. I bought a blue amerucana, a light Sussex, a cream legbar and a chocolate orpington.

I will be taking the little man back on Saturday to exchange for a young lady (fingers crossed)

Oh! Chickens Galore said that they do have both parents on the premises so it should be 100% CL. Hmmmmm

Hi Veggie.

glad that they are going to exchange. I have very dark downed chicks often, and the true 'tell' on the chicks is that the females will have a very definite dorsal stripe - and a V on their little heads... on mine it is darker. -- The males will have more diffused stripes, and a head splotch. The splotch on that little guy is very small...and it can get confusing because females will sometimes have a bit of white down in the center of their dorsal head V. --

two males in the back ground with blurred dorsals and white blotches, female in the foreground with with tiny snip in her head V and visible dorsal stripes (these are a couple of weeks old too)


Only the foreground male is CL - the two in the background are hybrid CL X Isbar and I think they are females and both have a little white snip on their heads--but it is barely visible.


A hatchling from a couple of years ago -- male - barely can see the dorsal stripes - and visible head dot. Because his eyes nearly have cleopatra eyeliner - I don't use eyeliner as a 'tell' for sexing but some do....If I look closely boys seem to have a white ring around the eye if they have the eyeliner stripe. The girl in first pict above is already old enough that they eyeliner is fading into the face


Girl here with dark down - and slight white on head V but the definite dorsal stripes are the indication of female in my flock - and if I recall correctly the one Punnett describes in his writing. Boys it is diffused stripe - but mine all come with a big blotch. I know some other flocks also go by lightness and darkness of down. HTH - Good luck with your exchange...




Different light, different camera setting, but here is how much my boys in the first two pictures have lightened in the month or so since they were hatched...The very dark downed chicks were from several years ago....

Thank you so much for all of your pictures! It's a shame that he's a "He" because he's become quite sweet! Unfortunately, we are only zoned for hens or I would keep him. He has lightened up (in color) even in the short amount of time that I've had them. Definitely lacking the stripes of a girl.
