Cream Legbar Working Group: Standard of Perfection

If you are also on the Cream Legbar thread, then perhaps you have seen my post!

I recently bought chicks from the Secret Hills Ranch who are located in San Diego, CA

I was fortunate enough to get chicks from the Jill Rees line and also from Curtis Hale's line.

Eden - Jill Rees line:

Onóra - Curtis Hale line:

Elyse - Curtis Hale line #2:

I am a bit confused and decided to come here to ask you guys. Is it important how clear a female chicks autosexing line is? Does it have to be a dark line with no breaks, or as long as you can distinguish between male and female, it's okay? They're only going to be pets and never bred, but I spent a good amount on these little babes and was just wondering if I should feel disappointed. ): Does coloring mater when they are chicks, or only when they become adults? Perhaps I shouldn't worry and wait for my sweet babes to grow up?

Hi Ashley,

here is a 'plate' from an article in a genetics journal back in R.C. Punnett's day. It shows the different chick downs that he was experiencing - and he stated he saw no real effect in the differences in adults based on chick plumage.

and here is a slightly enhanced photo back from the days of Pease:

These illustrations and a number of others are in the Breed Guide on the Cream Legbar Club's website--- if you look at the left navigation bar and go to the bottom -- the link is right above 'site map' On that website also is a buyer's check list -- useful for both buyers and sellers to ask questions about the chicks that you are buying.

One thing that you can do is document the chicks and their growth just as you are doing -- because you will be helping other Cream Legbar fanciers in the future -- they can learn from your experiences...so thanks! You have nice chicks there---and there will be a lot of factors that will influence their growth and their appeal to you as pets--- so personality -- and egg laying ability as well as their adult appearance are all things that you can look forward to and inform people about -- It will be a fun journey for you and your documentation will be priceless.

I am definitely doing that! I am weighing them everyday and taking pictures so everyone can get an idea of how a Rees vs. Hale chick would be like! Thank you SO MUCH on your post! You've definitely made me feel much better as on the thread my chicks got shot down for not having great auto sexing qualities and it made me a bit sad. I don't blame them though, as many of their chicks have beautiful crisp, unbroken lines down their back and I asked for their advice in the first place!

You have eased my heart and I sincerely can't thank you enough. The whole day today I was feeling a bit disappointed that my chicks weren't "textbook." I guess I just have to wait and see when they grow up!

By the way, I've seen so many people make their own page where they can post pictures and write what they like. Do you know how I'd go about doing that?
