Cream legbars

Here are this years pullets.

I was surprised to see them all come out with the dark grey crests this. Only two out of the ten hens that we breed this year had the dark crests. Last year about 80% of the pullets came out with the Cream Crests and 20% with the dark crests as expected. It will be interesting to see how the rations shake out in the spring for the next generation. Note: My wife likes the dark crests so she is pretty happy with this group. I prefer the cream crest but also am pretty happy with this group. They are much more consistent that what we were seeing 6 years ago.

Anyone know anything about the standard of perfection? I was reading up on it, but don’t know if my girls are

Yes...I know about the breed standard I was on the review committee that was put together to discuss the breed standard when the the first draft of the APA proposed standard was discussed. All the discussion that was done for this was done on the "Cream Legbar Working Group" thread. You can search that thread and see all the discussion that went into Draft #1 back in 2012. More recently in 2018 the post on the end of that thread went through the most recent draft (Draft 4) with breeding tips on how to breed to the major points in the SOP. The subsequent drafts were discussed off line in the Standards Committee of the Cream Legbar club. I am not on that committee but still am keeping up on all the changes.

There are two parts to the SOP. First is Type. Second is Color or Variety.

The TYPE is what makes the BREED. They are the same for every variety of the the breed. For the Legbar that would mean the weight of the birds, the color of eggs, the cresting, yellow legs, reddish bay eye color, downward sloping backs, 45 degree tail angles, fanned tails, well rounded prominent breasts that extend past the beak of of the bird, etc. Your birds look like they are decent examples of the Legbar breed type (although nothing is perfect). The variety are the things outside of the type (usually color) that make different categories inside a breed. In the USA there are currently people working on Cream, Golden Crele, White, and Opal color varieties as well as people working on Rose Comb varieties for the comb. Your birds meet the SOP for the Legbar breed and for the Golden Crele Variety. So no they are not Cream Legbars but rather Golden Crele Legbars. The Cream color has a taupe (greyish brown) body color and cream (off white) hackle color. The Golden Crele which is what you posted have a brown body color and gold (yellowish) hackle color.

That’s very helpful, thanks. My friend hatched about 20 and i got two, but they seemed to be about half and half different colours. Golden crele and just the cream
