Cream Legbars

Opinions of this 8 month old boy He isn't mine but a friend not too far away.
I was hoping you could get a better angled pic before commenting, but I can add a couple of observations. With this angle, I agree that the rooster appears to have a short back and a low wing carriage. A long bodied hen with high wings can easily fix this. I can not see the breast well enough to comment. While the comb and wattles are a beautiful red, the comb appears to have a split in the blade and the wattles are a bit more folded (taco shaped) rather than the smooth desired look. I can't see the earlobes well, but at least they are white. The tail looks like it has a good angle, though I also prefer the saddle feathers to cover the junction so that it looks less abrupt. The legs look strong and properly set. Color wise...well this is an area that is somewhat up to preference, standard interpretation, and stage of breeding. What I mean is that a few years ago I probably would have been happy with this guy. That's where I was in my Legbars' breeding development. Now...well to be blunt I have better roosters in my freezer coop. But everyone has to start somewhere, and I really think that anywhere is better than no start at all. IMO this rooster is IG/ig for cream or has an excess of autosomal red. While the standard does not say that the hackles and saddle need to match, the colors listed are the same and if anything the saddle should be a bit lighter than the hackles since they are edged in cream, and they are obviously not close to the same for this rooster. I hope that helps.

I think this is what makes it look like his tail comes straight out of his back. To me it looks like the tail angle isn't great but perhaps this is what I am responding to instead. That his tail just appears out of nowhere.

Ill grab some picks of my chicks tonight I have one that had a small headspot and we initially thought male but the wing colors are coming in very female to me. Maybe some comparison pics will be helpful.

I had one girl that the lady helped out of the shell after it was 18 hours with no further change and was starting to shrink wrap. Thought she had splayed leg but I think she has other leg issues at this point. Such a big softie I couldn't put her down like I should have, now she is using her wings and penguin walking to get around. Lays on her side often but seems to be able to get food and water. My daughter named her Faith I'm going to try using some zip ties around her legs tied together with another zip tie to see i that will help her get her legs under her and see if she might still yet get more use of her legs.

The other 3 from the hatch are doing fine and no one is picking on her at this point. The Pita Pinta's seem to play guard duty a bit.

If the zip ties/ bandaid therapy doesn't work throw her in a shot glass with some shelf grip on the bottom- make sure to have food and water high up within her reach. Sometimes they just need to keep their feet under them for a day and get those legs a little stronger.

Good luck with her

Already tried these things at this point she is almost 3 weeks old and just trying to get her some additional support for her to be able to move as much as she is able. I think something is wrong in both the hip and the knee. May still have to put her down but she is currently getting around and fighting to be a chicken.

I really wish you luck with her. But in my limited experience, chicks with leg issues that don't clear up in a few days are destined for a very short sad life. I have tried to see if chicks could make it only to ultimately find them no longer living. I now personally choose to cull any chicks that have leg issues that don't correct in a few days.

Yeah was all prepared to do it and wife and daughter were horrified by the idea. At this point she seems ok if but gimpy. We shall see how she does. I've learned my lesson though to let nature take its course at hatch. you just never know though because Ive seen some that do just fine with a little help. She is apparently able to get to food and water even with the handicap so has survived to date.

If this doesn't help her at least "keep up" then I will put her down before long.

@caychris I think @KPenley gave a good assessment on the cockerel you were looking for comments on, using only the one picture provided.

I agree colorwise he is a little on the colorful side (though color or lack of is personal preference). I do like the color on his hackles and it would be nice if his saddle was the same tone as that. His wing triangle is showing too much of the rusty brown smudging, I feel the wing triangle should be free of these colors. I like the barring on his lesser sickle feathers but I personally prefer a barred main sickle feather rather than the mostly white feather. His tail angle isn't too bad though it could be a tad lower and also the barring on his tail I feel should be a little more evenly barred and more distinct rather than the slightly blurred barring we are seeing. I cant comment to much on type because of the camera angle and he seems to be standing off balance. I do like his head, good eye placement, nice beak, the earlobes look white in the picture. His wattles look a bit rough around the edges not really smooth lines and they are larger than I would prefer. Also his comb is nice and straight and fully erect, but too me the back of the comb extends a little too far and swoops upward, and Im not sure it should.

Really he is a decent male and would be a good starter CL male for most flocks, this is all just nit picky stuff that could be worked on. Like KPenley I wouldn't have hesitated at all to use this male when I started. Now That I have a little breeding and experience he wouldn't be my choice. But it all depends on where you are in breeding and what your goals are for the future of your flock.

Are you considering him as a male for your flock?

He is a male I might have access too if the male chicks I have do not come out preferable to him.
