creteeking my coop and run design

You will not see raccoons until it's to late and they are pretty much everywhere. We lived in down down Portland and had a 200 sq foot court yard surrounded by four story buildings with one alley access that had 8 foot tall gates on both ends. Raccoons came into our courtyard one night kill all the fish in our pond. We had the pond for four years but never saw a raccoon before that night and never saw one again after. The only reason we knew it was raccoons was that they left paw prints on our bird bath when they cleaned up after ripping our pond apart and killing all the fish and even our frog. The court yard was about 200 sq feet and was surrounded by 4 story buildings except for one ally access that had an 8 foot tall gate at both ends.

It's hard to see in the photo but If the holes in the wire you used are larger and 1"x1' then a raccoon can slip their fingers in grab your chicken and kill it.

thats the thing the way the coop is set up there is no way for a racooon to grab hold of a chicken at night and druing the day they are in the back yard roaming. under the security of a 24 v cattle fence.

The only comment I have to make is: weasels can slip through 1" chicken wire. Also, what are the dimensions of your perch? How many chickens will be using it? It looks a little light wt. I'd recommend at least 2 x 3 - 2 x 3. Do you get freezing weather? If so lay the perch so the wider dimension is what their feet rest on to help them keep their toes warm. Any closures for doors need to be tough enough that the average 2 year old child could not open them. Coons have the agility and smarts to open any thing else. And they will reach into or tear apart 1 x 1" chicken wire. If they can get a paw in, they can grab a chicken and eat it right through the wire. One poster reported that a coon chewed their birds legs off through the wire. I've dealt with coon destruction before. It's not an experience that you'll ever want to repeat. The 1/2" hardware cloth is well worth the extra expense.

When I had my coon issue, he came back in broad day light to get the three chickens that he missed the night before. So, don't think that predators are only night time issues. Last summer, I had a mama coon and 2 half grown babies chasing my car down the road, and later chasing my neighbor in the middle of the day. Same with foxes and coyotes. They're often seen in the middle of the day

all those are really good thoughts, to prevent the coons if there are any here witch i havent seen in two years. the outer fence to the yard is electrafied with 24 volt cattle system. and weesles dont live in kansas lol. at least not that ive ever seen or heard. and the wire i have up is rated for deer.
