Crime and the economy

There was a thread on the board not long ago that had many people from those countries state that they were glad that they had their system over ours.

If failing = the longer life expectancy that those nations enjoy, I'll take it. As a military brat, I enjoyed government health care throughout my childhood. We had good care and NEVER had to wait. Medicaid is a government health care plan, already covering millions of Americans.

Our current system leaves much to be desired. You want to talk long waits? When my DH needed to go see a rheumatologist recently, as a new patient it took him 6 months to get in, and that was with strings pulled.

If those systems had truly "failed" you would see their populations fighting for change (like is happening here). If the government is so inept, don't opt for their plan. I also would like to know why the big insurance companies are fighting this so hard if they truly believe that they can compete? Unhappy with a public plan, switch to private.

I would trust the government more then some company out to make a buck by denying my treatments and coverage. They aren't benevolent, they are businesses, and will treat you in the way that best impacts their bottom line. No matter what line they are trying to spin.

Government is not benevolent. Government is about getting re-elected. If government was benevolent, they wouldn't have lifetime pensions AND their own heathcare for life after ONE term.

BTW, the politicians are keeping THEIR healthcare program, not the peasant healthcare. Wonder why???

Medicare and Medicaid are bankrupt. There is no money to fund them, just like social security, except the money from your paycheck. They are not going to last unless our taxes skyrocket. This 'free' healthcare will cost more than 1 trillion dollars. ONE TRILLION! Yeah, that sounds free. If the gov't gets in the healthcare business, we are no longer a free country. It's unconstitutional, it's not what America is about.

I've lived many years without health care or insurance. I've been on waiting lists for months. It's not fun, but it's not the government's job to make your life easy for you. That's NOT THEIR JOB. Please, please, please, read the constitution, while we are still a free country. There are other ways to better the healthcare industry. This is NOT the solution.

It seems like they should be able to do that. Doesn't sound real complicated. They are saying that everyone will have to have coverage. So, just take a percentage of your check, have the employer match it and you have health care. Or if you prefer to keep your current plan keep it. Sounds too simple huh.

This isn't about democrats or republicans. A republican made a horrible mess in MA with a healthcare program. This is about: our God-given rights as an American citizen, as stated in the constitution, versus the rights of the STATE government, and the duties of the US government.

Healthcare is not constitutionally in the realm of the federal government. It's supposed to be a state government thing, hence programs like KidsCare, and state health welfare programs of so many names. The federal government can't run the DMV. I don't want them dealing with my kid's asthma.

If you want free health care, push for it at the right place: at the state level.

It's gotta be fed. States are always shutting down programs to balance their budget. Health care should be a national benefit. Health cost are too expensive for an average person to cover. Yes if we all ate properly and exercised our health care would be much lower. Our country is set up for commuting. Most people don't live within realistic walking distance of anything. We live on low cost fast food and are trained to like a lot of sugar, fats and salt in our diets. Most people only see a Doctor when they are sick and do very little preventative care. Then when they do get sick, they get real sick.

It's gotta change and I think it will.

I agree with you. There should be a waiver for the copay if someone is extremely poverty stricken and has recurring issues (ie: destitute but needs dialysis), but those are certainly details that can be worked out.

I'm not too worried about the offices being crowded as a result - in the long term. One approach is to streamline the paperwork expected from physicians. At this point, a huge amount of a doctor's time is spent researching and dickering with insurers over what is covered and what isn't by each firm. That time should be cut with some consistency in paperwork and coverages, thus freeing up a doctor's time to do what they should be able to do: see patients.

As more people switch to being seen by family practitioners instead of at the ER as the uninsured are currently forced to do (the ER can't legally turn away a patient for inability to pay, other physicians and clinics can), I think more practices will open and clinics will be able to increase their staff to deal with the influx of patients. They will, after all, be paying patients at that point. Hospitals will know that if they see a patient, they won't have to write off the cost, as they are forced to do a huge portion of the time now. With that income consistency should come some stabilizition.

Again, I'm not saying everything will be perfect, no system is. But better is a worthy goal to have.

I hope they get the records centralized too. Every health care person I have talked to is on board with that. I know there's arguments about invasion of privacy issues and potential problems with employers, but if I'm at an emergency room with a heart attack I would like for them to have my whole history at their fingertips.

I agree....Healthcare and making your/my life easier is not the federal government's job!

I've lived in a country with "free" healthcare and have friends thatstill do. It's a joke. My taxes are too high already. The job of government is to govern, not be everything to everybody. I'm sick and tired of paying for all of the dead weight in this country. NOTHING IS FREE!!!!
