Crisis for Misty...(Update..she died.)

So... I listened very closely to Misty...right and left sides...she looked like a head ornament....wing over my head both sides..no wheezing, crackling..in fact no noise whatsoever.

I decided to keep Misty with me all day today...wherever I went I had food and water on offer at her disposal...she will eat a little and drink a lot as is her usual way these days...maybe the water helps her digest the tiny morsels of food she will eat. She did surprise me by managing to catch a small mouse..she killed it and was about to eat it but I took it from her and disposed of it....I will say that at the moment I am having major problems with mice...fifteen were in the chicken house a few nights ago...eating feed...poison is put out for them but not in any areas where the chickens can access...I am ever vigilant when any mice are in the areas frequented by the chickens...mice are immediately removed and disposed of....I will say that when Misty became ill that there was no evidence of mice.

Tonight Misty was in the main coop and she was sleeping alongside her flockmates..she would normally sleep in a nesting box but she surprised me by choosing to rest on a perch with her mates...

I am still of the mind that she may be very old or that she may have a tumour....

Whatever the reason...she is alive because of the great knowledge that you have imparted...!

She is Misty the mystery to me...

Thanks again all...we will keep searching and hoping that she will continue to survive....with your help of course

I suspected a possible ruptered air sac due to her "bloated breast" appearance in the previous photo you posted. Whistling wouldve been the telltale sign. In a way, no internal noises are a good sign. Unfortunately I'm going to have to agree with you and other posters who mentioned it might be a tumor. All you can do is continue to provide comfort support. I wish you and Misty the best of luck.

Thank you Dawg53..she will not suffer, if she started showing signs of distress I would have no hesitation in ending her life...she has only ever been broody once and hatched twelve chicks who all are young..she has given me far more than I could ever have given her. I owe her so much..

Thank you for all of the wonderful support and suggestions you and so many others here have given us both..it is so much appreciated.

Well, Misty is now living indoors with me...I found her lying on the coop floor this morning...an amorous Rooster had attempted to mate with her....neither she nor me were amused.....

She is now sleeping peacefully in front of a log fire...she has eaten quite a lot of chick feed...I know her days are numbered...I just want for her to enjoy (without stress) her last few days.

This is so hard on me..having lost Maman recently I want so much to enhance the life of Misty and to let her passing to be peaceful.

Thanks again everyone

I will update with any news...good or bad

No longer a crisis....Misty passed away this evening peacefully in my arms, she was so tired and she did not show any signs of distress...she fought a long and hard struggle to survive..today she spent a lot of time sleeping, I did offer her buttermilk but she was not interested in anything other than to sleep and rest in my arms..she was content and that is all I could ever have asked for her.

Even though I am so very sad at her demise I am so thankful that she did not suffer..I could not have asked for more for her.

I would like to thank each and every one of you who have offered suggestions and help for her...you have given me hope that she may have survived, sadly, this was not to be.

Dawg53 you have been amazing in your offers of suggestions...I am sure she enjoyed her attention and new feed...tomato juice was one of her favourites!

Thanks again

Suzie and the late Misty
