Crisis for Misty...(Update..she died.)

I'm not sure what it could be then. Sorry. I don't have any experience with that kind of stuff, I'm just going off what I've heard and read. Hopefully someone more experienced can help misty. Good luck!

Suzie, I have heard of tumors growing in and around the crop area. I have a hen that has trouble with water and eating as well, although she is not ill. She is 3 years old and since she was about 1 year old, she has developed a lump in her middle crop area. Of course at first I thought it was an impaction and treated it as one. But it never disappeared. When I first noticed it, it was the size of a garbanzo bean. It has now grown to the size of a peach pit. She drinks water and it constantly comes back up. She will only eat wet mash like food and I will see her picking for 20 mins at her food, but I think very little is going down. I have taken to giving water to her at least 2 or 3 times a day to keep her hydrated.

It is possible that your girl has this same issue, but more advanced. If this is the case, I don't think there is much that can be done other than a surgery. You might take her to a vet for an xray. Some people do all kinds of surgeries on their birds here on BYC. If you are brave, you can try it yourself.

I am so sorry about your baby.

Well....Misty is still alive against all odds....I have been extensively massaging her crop and treating her with olive oil ( as Dawg53 originally suggested ) ...she will drink water to excess without an apparent problem but she still refuses to eat unless I put food into her mouth...this is so frustrating...

I am determined to continue with her recommended treatment (s) ..while there is life there is hope!

Thanks to all of you for being there for me and Misty....!

Well..despite the odds stacked against her...Misty is still alive and she is managing to eat although with difficulties...she has a strange trait of standing on one leg... here she is ( photograph taken yesterday afternoon )..she still has olive oil and tomato juice to aid her...she looks tired..maybe she is old or ill..she hates me with a vengeance...whenever I approach her she seems to breathe a sigh of eek...what next treatment is coming to me...while she shows an
interest I will keep nurturing her...

thanks for all of your contributions...especially Dawg53...!

Thanks all!

Suzie

Hi Dawg!

Her crop never seems to be full...she puffs out her chest but I think that may be her normal stance these days...she always seems better after her tomato juice...she still shakes her head and seems to have difficulty swallowing any hard feed...she will eat small amounts of chick feed and soft foods..it is so very frustrating to me me that she struggles when eating...she drinks OK but I am concerned that she may have a respiratory problem or a tumour at the start of her oesophagus...

Do you have any further thoughts into what she may be suffering from ?

Suzie

Try putting your ear up against her right side and listen closely, then the left side and listen. Other than gut noises; listen for whistling, clicking, gurgling, rattling or wheezing. If you hear whistling, it could be a ruptured air sac. Clicking could her heart or a bad heart valve. Gurgling, rattling or wheezing indicates a respiratory disease.

Thanks Dawg!

I will listen closely to her in the morning..it is 1.00am here right now ..she would not be amused at me fetching her out of her house right now....

Congratulations on your BYC Friend badge too! So well deserved!

Will update with any more findings on my listening to Misty's body.

Suzie

I am so glad Misty is hanging in there. I keep hoping for the best for you both! Her posture does seem a bit odd in that photo, but perhaps Misty is like me-- I always look strange in photos too. Maybe we caught her at a strange moment, poor thing.
Are her feathers just ruffled strangely at her throat, or is there a protrusion there? If you both feel up to it, more photos or a video might help. I'm wondering if there is a tumor there or if I am misinterpreting the photo.
