Then how about a screen held down with an eye hook? One on the bottom to hold it down and one connected to the roof to attach it to the roof for cleaning purposes? You could use a storm window screen cut to scale.

I'm thinking along the same line. But I think we'd have to frame it out and use hardware cloth or galvanize wire/poultry netting to predators.

HC is the best choice. A frame would be good.
Something like the top of some chicken tractors.
