A little writing that came up on my FB memories from awhile back. Only "Kitten" is still with us, the rest have passed on.

The Characters:

"Kitten" - At the time a recent street rescue, likely about 4 months old here.

Nugget - 5lb Chihuahua who showed up in the driveway, professing his love for Ricca. A home search left him unclaimed and he stayed on with us.

Bubba Chunk - An old fat cat from the pound. He was fat when we adopted him. LOL

Ricca - 105 pounds of German import Shepherd, flunked out of K9 school.

Logan - The sane and rational one, 95 lbs of German Shepherd.

The Story from one morning:

This morning I heard the skittering of little feet, lot's of little feet. Then, suddenly, Nugget comes flying into the room, with Kitten hot on his heels. He heads North into the kitchen, faces off, yips, then I hear some scuffling. Kitten then comes shooting out of the kitchen and dashes under the dining table. She hides in wait. Nugget comes trotting out from the kitchen, looking for Kitten. Kitten pauses, hunkers down, flicks her tail, then the chase is on again! Nugget bolts past, trying for an escape to the West. Right at the threshold to the living room, Kitten makes her move. She almost gets him! Nugget rushes past, a mad run towards the couch. Kitten in hot pursuit!

It's a race to the King of the Hill position on the highest pillow the couch can offer. Nugget gets there first! Kitten tries to sneak up on him, but Nugget sees her coming and blasts off for the kitchen again.

Ricca decides she can't stand it anymore, and she jumps up to investigate. Nugget dances in front of her, enticing her to play. She drops to her front feet, but gets distracted by Kitten. Kitten makes a bold play, and swats her nose in such a cute way that it throws Ricca off. Nugget takes this chance to race into the dining room. But he didn't know Bubba was approaching the same turn, just minding his own business. Bubba just wants to check on the status of breakfast, and didn't foresee Nugget barreling through the doorway. He stops fast at the sound of those little feet, hunkers down. Nugget, crashing through the house with wild abandon, is suddenly face to face with a hungry, grouchy old fatass in no mood to play. Bam! First paw strike to the face. Nugget thinks it's a game, and drops to his front paws. "Yip!" Pow! Pow! Pow! A series of smacks and quite the serious growl come from this angry old cat.

Now Nugget is stuck. Face off with the cat, or attempt to reroute through the kitchen where Ricca and the Kitten may possibly be laying in wait?

He opts for the easier path, and tries to causally get past Bubba. Whack! Another swat, this time right on the butt as he heads past. This causes him to pick up the pace, and race on through. The sound of those little feet again, and that brings Ricca and the Kitten both back onto his tail.

With breakfast not yet prepared, Bubba is now in an even worse mood. When Kitten and Ricca come through the now heavily guarded kitchen door, Bubba is waiting. In no mood for games, it's a risk now to leave the area. Kitten tries it first, but she pauses to sit and stare at him. Thinking about the best way to approach this road block. Ricca comes up behind her. Being brave, she faces the paw smacks that are sure to come.

She raises her head, squints her eyes, and valiantly proceeds through the doorway. Smack! A whole series of smacks! Growling, hissing, spitting, he throws everything he has at her. Ricca continues, not in the least phased by his foolishness. Kitten's turn now though. She watched this all unfold, and thinks she is ready. But is she?

She continues to sit and stare. Then suddenly she moves, and walks causally yet with a purpose. Bubba thinks he's ready. He's grumbling already and she's still 5 feet away. On she comes though, and his confidence is wavering. She's SO tiny, but completely unpredictable. He raises a paw, deepens his protest. She's almost to him!

It's now or never Bubba, what will he do? At the very last moment, he chickens out and heads for the safe room. Little does he know, the kitten is willing to follow him into the safe room through the little cat sized door. Out Bubba comes again, his plan for escape quickly foiled! Now a confident kitten sitting in the doorway, looking out at her triumphs. She spies Nugget distracted under the dining room table, presumably cleaning up crumbs. Who knows though what that little dog is up to.

Perhaps he is just putting on a show, attempting to look nonchalant so as to keep a close eye on the status of the game. Kitten pops through the door, and saunters over to investigate.

She doesn't get the chance! Nugget races off, and she's after him in hot pursuit. Ricca is up too, getting into the heat of the game. 1 lap! 2 laps! Around and around, this one in the lead, that one coming ahead. Who will win?

Logan suddenly stands up, since clearly this is a fantastic bit of fun. He grabs hold of Ricca as she darts past him! Nugget upon seeing this, turns to aid in her rescue. "Yip! Yap! Let her go!" he protests. It's turning into quite the scuffle!

"ENOUGH!" yells the human. All of them pause, and look towards her. This interrupter to the morning game. Then they remember. They all suddenly remember what time it is, after being so thoroughly distracted.

"Breakfast?"
