As far as I know they only harm them by making it hard for them to eat and in our case drink.

Mine eats well, in that you often saw her at the feeder but she wasn't getting much to go down so that's why she was always at the feeder. You need to gently feel her crop now and then to check that she is getting a full crop after eating.

Oh and watch her drinking, ours used to spill more than she got and was constantly soaked down the front.

But as long as they are eating and drinking I've no reasons I can think of it should affect their lifespan.
