Hello -

We have a 2.5 yo easter egger hen who is nit currently laying. She had a hard molt most of the fall, was periodically laying and then we moved. She is eating and drinking but is very thin, and her crop does not empty at night. Her breath does not smell. The crop feels like crunchy dough and decreases in size after massage each morning. There is little to no sand. The chickens eat layer pellets, and free range. They have oyster shell. She happily free ranges when we let them out. Any ideas?

No ideas because I’m dealing with the same! I’ve been massaging, giving my hen coconut oil and water only for 2 days, with minimal improvement. I’m going to try to vomit her today (gross!) because I’m out of ideas.

Good luck. We are trying to make her vomit but so far no luck.

Well, we ended up at the vet. Apparently our girl has developed an affinity for rocks. There are rocks in her digestive tract from her crop to her tail feathers, per X-ray. She is receiving mineral oil to help get them out, and she is on strict no more rock eating orders. Hope your girl is doing better.

Hi, how is your girl doing? Im dealing with the same problem. I have a hen who has a crop full of rocks, and its been 2 days of coconut oil and massaging with minimal improvement? Do you have any tips?

Unfortunately I do not. Our girl had the mineral oil administered by the vet and immediately started getting rid of rocks. The vet said to give more mineral oil every three days if needed, but I guess Abby the chicken wanted to be done faster than that. I did switch their food (mostly because their former brand is not available now) to nutrina but we didn’t do anything else.

wait, so she didn't make it? so sorry for your loss. I was thinking of trying mineral oil instead of coconut.
