I’m sorry I have to post again. But now I am having a different issue with another rooster. This is roadrunner. He was being picked on badly by the main rooster in my flock. He is an incredibly skittish bird, so I know it stressed him out. Once I caught him, which isn’t easy, there’s a reason he got his name. I got him in a kennel. He was great for two days, but scared and tried to escape away from me at all times. Noticed he was lethargic yesterday, but it was very very cold. So was hoping he was just keeping warm. Today it’s warming up and still lethargic. So I started evaluating him best I can.
What I have found is, his temperature is 104.8, his crop didn’t empty over night, this morning it feels like a stiff play dough. It doesn’t feel gritty, and is more pliable. It is not huge, just over the size of a golf ball. As well his poop is almost liquid, with little to no brown, mostly water. There is no smell out of his beak. I’ve been reading online but there is such a mix of information I thought I would post here instead. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want to lose another boy ..
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
not sure on age, over 2 years. He is underweight
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
He is lethargic, upon further looking he is underweight and his crop is not emptying. He feels like stiff play dough, just over the size of a golf ball, it does not feel grainy, it feels smooth.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
2 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
no
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
no, if anything stress may of caused this
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
we had to catch him to remove him from the main flock, the main rooster is a jerk, and was chasing him relentlessly, as well he isn’t generally a fan of being handled, so it caused a lot of stress for him
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Yesterday he took a bit of scrambled eggs but that is all.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Very runny
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
nothing so far, I just figured this out an hour ago
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
a vet is not an option, I have to treat myself
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
He was in a barn either straw / shavings.
Now he is on shavings and a towel over the shavings
