Just wondering if anybody knows what might cause crop paralysis and liver enlargement? I just had to have one of my hens euthanized, and those were the only notable things that the vet saw on X-ray and ultrasound. He didn’t offer any explanation. The other chickens are fine. It seemed to come on very fast, which makes me think maybe some kind of toxin?

I am wondering if it was a fungal infection in the crop, toxins released from that? Did the vet offer trying lavage or some other method of crop emptying? Of course, trying lavage on a bird is extremely difficult with a full crop, without them potentially inhaling the crop contents and suffocating. Some vets will do surgery to empty a crop. I realize this would be expensive and invasive, as well. Curious, though. Was your vet an avian specialist?

He is an avian vet. He said he didn’t see any sign of a fungal infection, but I’m going to treat it as an infectious disease/fungus and disinfect everything. Can’t hurt. I was all set for him to do surgery if necessary, but he said there was no blockage, the muscles just didn’t seem to be working. I just really wanted to know what was going on and all he could tell me was the liver was enlarged.

No experience with crop stasis. That's too bad, I was going to ask if they were a farm vet.
