Hi- one of our chickens has a large crop. We have tried oyster shells and apple cider vinegar in the water but it isn’t going down. Any suggestions? Thank you
Oyster shell is for calcium, not grit. Make sure that your chickens have granite poultry grit in a separate container than food, so they can take what they need. Your hen looks to have a crop disorder called pendulous crop. Can you check her crop first thing every morning before she eats or drinks, to see if the crop has emptied any, or if it is full and firm, squishy. She may need to wear a crop bra, to keep her crop from overfilling. I would read the following article and try some of Azygous’ treatments: https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/
What are you feeding your flock including any extras or treats? You may need to separate her in a wire dog crate with fresh water, and maybe put some vitamins with electrolytes in it. Then check her crop in the morning and let us know if it has emptied much. If she has eaten normally today, you can start that tomorrow, where she needs to be on limit food for a day or two. @azygous is much better with crop problems than I, so read her article first and then we can go from there.
