Crop Surgery at Home??

Has anyone performed crop surgery at home on their chicken?? Mine swallowed nylon string and it is balled up in her crop for 2 days (about the size of a golf ball). She is still eating and drinking but it is getting time sensitive. I have called several vets and the best option is a doc 2 hours away that can do it in 2 days time and charges $400.

I have read several articles online and sounds like a lot of people have done it themselves at home but I have never performed surgery on any animal. Any advice?
