Hello all. My wife and I have some extra space in our garden, only like 1/5 of an acre or a little less even. We have been thinking of growing some sort of grain our chickens can nibble on. We were leaning towards buckwheat (we have bees coming soon and buckwheat blooms for a month and is a great nectar producer) until we learned of the toxicity of the greens. Has anyone had problems with buckwheat or any suggestions to fill our garden with chicken snacks? Thanks for your time.

Hey Scott!!! My girls eat EVERYTHING! (well almost anything) they LOVE cucumbers! I give them one almost every day! If they had the run of my garden the only thing they would leave alone is my peppers. (not sure why!) I also tried sprouting some wheat berries for them. They were very snobby and did not like the wheat grass. but they sure love REGULAR grass. they eat it all up if I don't keep them contained!!! They also love lettuce. Every which way! Hope this was helpful!

I appreciate the response! And yes they eat just about anything huh, including the kale we have started. I took your advice and moved our peppers around some of our greens so the ladies are less likely to head that direction. We decided to go with wheat to fill the rest of the open area benefits being seed for the chickens and other birds and straw at the end. Again thank you for the response.
