Cross breeding RIR Roster and BR hens

Yes, a red sexlink is the same as a Red Star. That's just someone's trade name for their brand.
Yes, you can breed brother to sister, however it's not the most desirable cross. Father to daughter or granddaughter or mother to son or grandson is better-called linebreeding. Crossing siblings brings out traits they have in common, good OR bad.

I would caution an individual about using use a white rock to do a red sex linked cross. Some recessive white birds carry gold and not silver. A person would need to test cross a white rock before they use them in a sex linked cross.

In a test cross a person would cross the white rock female with a black tailed red male . The male would also need to be homozygous (pure) for gold. Then see if the offspring all have red down. Hatch about 20 chicks. If a person gets all red down chicks then the female carries gold and can not be used.

The white rock may also carry the wrong E locus allele. If the test cross produces black chicks, she is the wrong locus. Some times rock also carry sex linked barring so you could get barred chicks that are male and non barred females which would be a black sex linked cross. This being true if the chicks have a black down or dark down.

Some commercial breeders use birds they call white rocks and these birds are bred to insure that they have the silver gene and not the gold gene. The rocks are sometimes called silver factor white rocks.

OMG the gene-guru has it going on! Tim, I've been following your posts on several topics. I thought color genetics in DOGS was complicated. I'm going to just sit here in absolute awe and know myself for a piker.

Dogs are EASY compared to this. And there are a bunch of people I've talked german shepherd coloring with who were impressed with me (not a lot of people realize for instance that there is such a thing as a black and tan saddle patterned sable, or that some very dark sables are actually masking the ancient brindle original in the breed... And then there's the complications of merling in other breeds, white, lethal and not, and deafness and the like...

But after reading all the chicken color genetics posts, I'm going to kow-tow now. You rock.

I so agree-Tim does rock! Thanks, Tim, again.

Tim, my question is...how can I learn more about all this chickens genetics. This is my first year doing chickens and it really sounds like fun learning all the combinations. Any information you could teach would be great! Thanks Tim.
