Cross breeding?

I have 24 mutt eggs in the incubator right now, end of day 6. They are, I believe, red sex links hens and RIR rooster. I am hoping to start a flock of BLR Wyandottes for next year, we will see. I can tell you this, my hens lay some "BIG" eggs, and I am not real sure how the Wyandotte's will measure up. I am concerned I may be spoiled to these huge eggs. I got a couple dozen from a friend, and the seemed soo small in comparison. I had to eat twice as many of his eggs. Most pure breeds were actually cross breeds at one time, this is the same way with dogs, what is now considered a pure bred, was very possibly a cross breed when it originated.

Wow! Show us pics when they hatch! So I have one final question, is it safe to eat a fertile egg? I would be so sad if I crack open an egg and a little baby fall out!

as long as you collect your eggs everyday it is safe to eat them. Don't go trying to grab some broodys eggs tho for one you might have a chick and another you might lose a finger.

Just gather eggs everyday and you are fine. I have 2 barnyard mixes now one lays a pink egg the other a really dark brown egg.
